Q: Do you think it is better to nitpick over the details while you construct each individual part of the level, or just start placing blocks and making basic designs, to then modify and perfect later on? I think the former helps me make a better level but the latter is much quicker. A: First I place lines, a skeleton, as the basic gameplay of the part. Then I usually do is I decorate a piece of the part exactly how I want it to see how it looks. Then I modify that little piece until it can't possibly get any better. Then I decorate the rest of the part the same way I did with the little piece. Repeat until all parts are done. Okay, I'll try that! :D

You can let someone else decorate it! SoulsTRK gave a level with no deco to Noriega and he is currently decorating it. 2. Of course you can! It has a low chance of getting featured, but you can still build levels like that! There are lots of different art styles that can be very interesting to use, that are non 1.9. I have made a 3 minutes long level in 1.4 style, so I know

Is it fine to have mostly monochrome levels (i.e. all the objects are the same color with very little major color changes) as long as it fits in with the theme of the level (ex. ice, hell)?

This might sound like a weird question, but I'm working on a level currently, and I'm wondering what's the difference between an 8 Star Insane and a 9 Star. I've played some levels like that before, but I'm still not able to spot it.
Also, how do you hide invisible platforms behind spikes? I'm asking so I can add a few of these in the Ball parts of my level. I know some creators who do it without making it too obvious (by using clouds, for example), but some are able to make it look like a "spike platform".
Edit: I tried to place the spikes in another ID layer, doesn't work. :V

Do I honestly need monsters chasing the player or a bossfight in the level for it to be good? I've been seeing a lot of featured levels recently with those.

In reality that actually tends to make a level worse as it encourages bad gameplay and basic design. However, that's not always the case, but Id only suggest trying seriously to make a good bossfight area until you are very experienced with moving objects :)
