I'll be posting a few more posts here. I just want to share some of my stupid thoughts. Hope you guys aren't too annoyed
Let's have a thought experiment. In the future, when Robtop gets old and decides to not support the game by himself anymore (through retirement or... other reason), who would support the game then (if anyone at all)? I believe that there are 3 ways this would go:
1. Robtop sells the game to a big AAA company, giving all control over to the company. The future of the game would entirely depend on the company he sold it too. Either the game would get great updates the QOL features, OR the company will manage to add microtransactions to every aspect to the game and add features no one wanted. The community would be decisive on the new features, creating a more toxic environment and turning away members. This option will probably be the worst for the game (depending on the company).
2. Another small developer takes Robtop's place (either another person, or one of Robtop's kids decide to take over). It's hard to know if the new person would be adequate enough to support the game, trying to keep up with rating levels, fixing sudden problems, and developing the game at the same time, whilst not angering the community at the same time. The future of the game would entirely depend on how well the new developer does. They would either be an excellent developer and role model, or divide the community with their unpopular/bad decisions.
3. Robtop decides to not sell the game or hire a new developer (no one could perfectly replace Robtop, right?). Robtop would still keep the servers up, but would stop developing updates and (most importantly) rating new levels (including the daily and weekly levels). Whilst the community would still be active, the motive to create new levels would diminish. GD private servers would rise because of this, but due to the barrier to entry, new players would find it difficult to join these servers. They will definitely be copies of GD that will try to capture the essence of GD, but none of them would ever have the same light as GD. Years after the announcement, the community would be only a shadow of what it was. Many of the original members have moved on to other things. The game isn't attracting new players as it used to. The player base has shrunk massively. Despite this, there would still be a small dedicated player base that still upload level, and share their experiences in various social platforms. Sure, it's not as big or exciting as it used to, but they still love the game despite this. Suddenly, the servers cut dead. Every level, every memory, every comment, gone. Geometry Dash is now dead. 10 years of history, now only a fragment of peoples memories. With nothing left, people move on to other things. People will look back at the game as that "funny cube jumping game".
It's hard to say what will happen, but whatever happens, I hope GD has a good ending instead of it being ruined by big company.
