Ever since I've played Geometry Dash (and learning some insights about art and philosophy), It took me a damn long time to realize that Every, Collaborations, are goddamn boring.
What I mean by "lost its meaning" is because it... literally lost its meaning.
I don't want to make any of you do this but the definition of Collaboration is:
1 : to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor An international team of scientists collaborated on the study.
2 : to cooperate with or willingly assist an enemy of one's country and especially an occupying force suspected of collaborating with the enemy
3 : to cooperate with an agency or instrumentality with which one is not immediately connected The two schools collaborate on library services.
2 : to cooperate with or willingly assist an enemy of one's country and especially an occupying force suspected of collaborating with the enemy
3 : to cooperate with an agency or instrumentality with which one is not immediately connected The two schools collaborate on library services.
And yes, I did just copy-paste something from Google that anyone can do. Thank me later.
But in short, It's basically working together. And you may argue that they do work together to make a level. And yes! In-fact, They do.
The problem is that the process of building it, Is completely soulless. You can definitely tell whose part is who. Even more so when their name takes up 50% of their part. Maybe I exaggerated that a little.
Like what are the Collab hosts are thinking? Why are they making them build part by part? Build the entire level together!
What are they trying to make? A Frankenstein level? I shit you not, If you see any "waifu" version of a level, And you can't tell what level is it based on the character's design alone, That level is easily forgettable.
I can think of the opposite example would be Clubette. But it's one part of the level and that sucks. Maybe.
Let's fix it. Let's actually Collaborate:
I'm going to use an analogy.
Think of the level as a Giant canvas. The artists are the creators of the level. By today's tradition, You assign specific space of the canvas to each artists and they paint the canvas. The result? Okay let's be fair, It's a beautiful collage. Many styles and colors but let me you remind this:
You are making a single Artwork.
Not A Goddamn Collection!
How about we actually work together and paint the ENTIRE canvas together??? And not assign each of the artist to one spaces. It's killing the true aspect of creativity. I can imagine millions of original levels if the creators just allowed other creators to create them and themselves. It's truly an artistic beauty and you have no idea what kind of amazing things they might create!
Now, I understand why it has to be this way. There is no "live-building" feature, Considering the development of the game, I highly doubt it will be a thing. But if it does happen, It might even revolutionize collaboration as we know today.
So, When was this problem started?
Surprise, surprise:
Collaboration by saRy.
Everyone who built the level, part by part.
...And we've following this tradition. Till this day...
This "part by part" is just the backbone of collaborations and we built a lot of concepts and things on top of it. From "Gameplay Creators" to "Decorators" to Ryan's AB method of building, when it reality it has it's "creativity" issue from the start.
So how do we fix this today?
By nature of the editor, You can't. I'd like to see creators interrupt each other while building and have some nice discussions like "why you should make it like this" and such.
But with an Insightful host, some transparency and communication, It could be possible.

tl;dr the part by part building in collab is killing creativity and we should build the entire level together than separately.
