I thought of this when I was randomly watching a video of Fast as Lighting by Ripplez.
Obviously quality is subjective, but there are some levels that people think are so innovative, that they are declared to be better than any other level made so far. I remember FaL was very impressive for its time when glow was very limited and this kind of design wasn't seen in levels by other creators. I think even 5 years later, this level's design still holds up extraordinarily well, even as levels have gotten more advanced, and it's a shame that it was somewhat forgotten.
What other levels were widely thought to be the "Best Level Ever"? (Please include videos because I'm lazy)

I feel like a lot of people thought Revolution by Funnygame was the best level for a while after it came out. Same thing with a lot of his other levels like Lonely Travel even if they're pretty underwhelming in retrospect, even for their time.

oohhhh, fast as lightning, a level that saying is ugly would be bias as it aged excellently but when it comes to gameplay is one of the shittiest biggest most inmense lumps of crap ever. i think people too often claim something being the best level ever sacrificing gameplay and not taking it in count infavour of visual aspect, but this is a level baby, not a fucking picture. evrything matters and should be well combined. But... but Fast as lightning has great gameplay! Except for the last ball of course.

Death Moon was considered as one of the best levels back then, and looking at it now it has aged pretty well. Its spiritual successor, Reanimation, was considered as one of the best too even though it wasnt as revolutionary. Another examples could be Artificial Ascent or Sirius.

Because I don't remember anyone saying Artificial Ascent or Sirius was the best level ever. The other ones, though, I definitely agree with, yes.

Ouroboros and Digital Descent kind of count. They're generally considered the best extreme demons, at least deco wise. Ouroboros especially.

But... but Fast as lightning has great gameplay! Except for the last ball of course. in my opinion unbalance is a real issue as the beggining and middle-end parts are wildly different in this aspect. seriously: its brutal. there are also some parts that are almost as unpleasant as the last ball spread in several past half parts. having to die once and once again in a difficulty spike to having to pass again through a sleep inducing part due to the dificulty contrast, for me, feels horrile to play. Actually yes, agree that the gameplay is unbalanced, and I died several times at the difficulty spikes near the end. But still to me it overall felt like a great experience.

Nine Circles was considered really good (notice I said “was”). Same with SuperSonic and Cataclysm/Bloodbath. BB and NC especially since we still feel their presence to this day.

I feel that Xenomorphosis was considered to be the best level at the time of its release because I think Viprin said it was his new most favourite level. Most of the other examples have pretty much been said with most really good levels that come out now aren't given such high treatment

In all time probably any funnygame level but for 2.1 I've heard Mastergame, Artifice, Quantum Variations, Magma Bound, and The Eschaton.
EDIT: and void wave lol

Any level was considered the best during 1.9 if it passed 100k downloads tbh
