in recent months the marvel films have become increasingly divisive, with many saying that they’re overrated and garbage, substanceless, depthless, etc., fuelled by the obsessive cult of Marvel fans. i figured I’d bring the topic to the forums. what are your thoughts on Marvel and the MCU? are the films as culturally significant as they say, or are they overhyped?
anyway here’s my thoughts:
pros:
- the Marvel films have changed the style of CGI-focussed films. while other CGI shitfests like Transformers focus on cutting the shot every 1.5 seconds, the Marvel films often give the audience wide, gaping shots (like in Ragnarok on the garbage planet), which make for a much more immersive experience
- the Marvel films were the first to create a shared universe across previously unlinked franchises, and they pulled it off well. better than DC and Dark Universe did at any rate.
-there are some incredibly well developed protagonists. Tony Stark is a character of great complexity, as are Captain America and even less fleshed out characters like some of the Guardians and Thor.
cons:
- the Marvel films often try to deal with heavy subjects, but are offset by the incessant childish jokes. the only films in the MCU which has maintained a consistently dark and serious tone throughout are Winter Soldier and Civil War in my opinion. most other “serious” films like Infinity War are always offset by the poorly placed jokes, often killing any form of tension or sadness in the mood.
- protagonists are always smiling and joking for no fucking reason. I expected Thor to be portrayed as a man broken by the loss of his home, his brother and his closest advisor. instead we got a joking, bantering Thor. the Marvel films are tonally inconsistent for the most part, and fail to reach a deeper emotional connection because of this.
- they have the worst villains ever. I’m not even kidding, Thanos’ motivations are stupid as fuck. you could just as easily bring balance to the universe by creating more resources with your powers instead of mass genocide. the ONLY villain in the MCU that was well-developed was Erik Killmonger. the rest are surface-level, take-over-the-world CGI robots.
anyway, those are my first thoughts. what are your thoughts on Marvel movies? are they as good as critics say? are they overrated?
