I've been really irritated about player made demon ratings recently. I've heard people calling Forest Temple an easier hard demon. People seem to call other levels harder than others just because they have this infamous vibe to them. Here's what I'd like to think:
Low end medium: Deadlocked High end medium: Jawbreaker Low end hard: Nine Circles Hard: ToE II v2 or Forest Temple High end hard: Supersonic or Windy Landscape
Most people who disagree will probably have beaten one as they were developing and one really recently. I heard Forest Temple being called way easier than ToE II v2, and an easy hard.
What does everybody think the dividing lines should be? Those are just my opinions on things.

Here's what I think: Non-demons These are levels that do not deserve a demon rating, even if they are rated demon. Some demons in this category: The Nightmare, Traction, Impact X, Dorabaedifficult4, and Ultra Paracosm. Some levels that are close to the border between this category and easy demons are Clubstep, Electroman Adven v2, and Propulsion (which is not a demon). On the non-demon side of the line between this category and easy demons is DeCode. Easy demons These are levels that deserve a demon rating, but are quite easy for levels deserving of this rating. On the easy demon side of the line between non-demons and this category is Theory of Everything 2. Some demons that are in this category are: Ditched Machine, Mechanical Showdown, X, Ultimate Circles, and Clubstep v2. Some that are close to the border between this category and medium demons are Electrodynamix v2, Aqueous, and Dimension Machine. On the easy demon side of the line between this category and medium demons is Blue Hell. Medium demons These are levels that are about average difficulty for levels deserving of a demon rating. On the medium demon side of the line between easy demons and this category is HeLL. Some demons that are in this category are: Dark Hell, Vibration, Death Step, ToE IV (Darwin), and Death Step. Some that are close to the border between this category and hard demons are Jawbreaker (TriAxis), Jawbreaker (ZenthicAlpha), and Airtime. On the medium demon side of the line between this category and hard demons is TOE III (Manix). Hard demons These are levels that are a bit harder than average difficulty for levels deserving of a demon rating. On the hard demon side of the line between medium demons and this category is Sidestep. Some demons that are in this category are: Nine Circles, Breakthrough, Necropolis, TOE III (Cropris), and Fusion. Some demons that are close to the border between this category and insane demons are Windy Landscape, Fairydust, and Supersonic. On the hard demon side of the line between this category and insane demons is Kitty. Insane demons These are levels that are much harder than the average difficulty for levels deserving of a demon rating. On the insane demon side of the line between hard demons and this category is ToE IV (Manix). Some demons that are in this category are: Ultrasonic, Deadlocked v3, Fusion II, Matilda the Machine, and Subterranean Animism. Some demons that are close to the border between this category and extreme demons are Hypersonic, Excessive Complement, and Cataclysm. On the insane demon side of the line between this category and extreme demons is Deception Dive. Extreme demons These are levels of the highest difficulty. On the extreme demon side of the line between insane demons and this category is RWR. Some demons in this category are: Down Bass, Phobos, Bloodbath, Athanatos, and Subsonic. At the highest end of difficulty, the hardest of the extreme demons, are Yatagarasu, Sonic Wave, Artificial Ascent, Digital Descent, Erebus, and Stalemate Redux.

Well, this is basically "A lot of people think x about a level and I think y so those people must be wrong and should all conform to my own personal ratings." Having it be based on public votes is honestly the best thing we can do. Since difficulty is oftentimes subjective, all we can really do is give people the ability to vote and see how it shakes out.

I'm not saying this system is flawless, but I can't really think of a better system.

I'm not saying this system is flawless, but I can't really think of a better system. Not really honestly. The best system is the opinions of honest people who compare these levels back to back to reach a sensible solution. I just don't like it when somebody who has beaten Bloodbath plays say, Supersonic for the first time and rates it a medium demon, or oblivious people rating it as extreme.

Well then first you need to define who would be an "honest" person. Then after you narrow that down you need to find the ones who have enough time to play a lot of demons. Then you need to find enough of people like that so that every demon can be rated. That system seems slow to me.

Honestly people rate levels on their opinions, which usually nobody agrees with. I find it really annoying...

why do you care about other's opinions? you clearly have your own rating system, why not just use it that way? people see things differently than others. case in point: i think swing squad is a medium/hard demon because it wasn't too hard for me. this would mean i found it easier than deadly clubstep, which for most people isn't the case. all i'm saying is use your own opinion, everyone else's opinion should be taken with a grain of salt

The difficulty is a subjective thing and everyone has different opinions on them because we all are better at different things and some levels may be difficult for us. For example, I am decent at ship but bad at wave and that's why I have trouble with Nine Circles levels, while I could do some harder demons with a lot of ship gameplay. It's a matter of what you're good at and how much time did it take for you to beat something.

I usually just consider a demon whatever it's rated. That doesn't mean I don't agree with you, I do.
Although I consider every demon I've beaten an Easy Demon because I suck at this game, with the only exception being Sidestep, which I consider a Medium Demon because I spent 4000-4500 attempts to beat it. However, if I play a Medium/Hard Demon and do really well and find it easy, I will call it an easy/medium demon. Sometimes I'll even try to beat it.
Definition of "Medium Demon": A level that will definitely take thousands of attempts to complete...
My demons that I've beaten, divided in Free Demons, Easy Demons, and Medium Demons (in order of easiest to hardest)
"Free Demons" that I've beaten: Seeker of Demon, Horizon Zero, Platinum Adventure, ClubstepDynamix, The Lightning Road, Insane Club, Space Club, The Nightmare, Demon Mixed, and Ice of Dawn
"Easy Demons" that I've beaten: Impulse, Radioactive Demon, Super Cycles, Impact X, Speed Racer, Crescendo, MasterGame (well I don't really know where to put this but I didn't struggle too much on it), Lights and Thunder, ConfuZion, Gotta Go FAST, Clubstep, and Theory of Everything 2
"Medium Demons" that I've beaten: Sidestep (that's it. no really.)

how about the easy solution of everyome having their own opinion and that trying and comparing the level is the only way to measure what you think the difficulty of the level should be
difficulty is a subjective gradient which can be approximately categorised but not precisely determined

I think it all just matters on subjective opinion. As long as people respect my opinion, I'm okay with them not liking my system.

There should be Very Hard Demon for Supersonic or Poltergeist difficulty, at least.

Difficulty is subjective, so the system we have right now represents everyone who votes (hurrah for communism, amirite?) You aren't wrong on people just arbitrarily voting on levels they haven't even played solely based on reputation, though, so what I think should be the case for demon ratings is that only people that have made some progress (say 50% of the level) would be able to vote. People using copyables wouldn't be able to vote though :/
