Alright, this is my first review, i'll see if I can give this a shot:
Glow by Geodasher36
Gameplay: Alright...I feel like the majority of the gameplay was a series of missed opportunities here. The level starts off with a very bland ship part (0-10%) that requires very little input from the player. The ship has basically no obstacles in it's way, so it can cruse along the floors and ceilings with ease.
Cube section #1 (10-23%)
This cube is actually pretty good in terms of gameplay. I really enjoy your use of slopes here. However, like the previous section, it really does feel empty and I really thing the player should be doing something more here to mix it up.
Ball section #1 (23-34%)
This ball section starts off pretty good, however it quickly goes downhill at 30% onwards, as once again the gameplay is empty. In this part I feel it would have been better if you occupied the player with gameplay (especially if it had good sync) rather than leaving the player with nothing but boredom.
Ship Section #2 (37-56%)
This section really overstates it's welcome. Because of this, this part gets old really, really fast. Other than the gravity change in the middle the player is basically flying in the middle the entire time. Try mixing long parts like this up a bit so the player is more entertained.
UFO section #1 (56-72%)
This section is an exact duplicate of the last part except you take control of a new form. Not much to say about this part.
Robot Section #1 (72-85%)
Ah, such a relief to finally have something different here. I like how you made this section more diverse with the frequent gravity changes and well timed orb presses that help the level have more smoothness towards it. In my opinion, this is perhaps the best part of the level gameplay-wise.
Spider Section #1 (85-100%)
Unfortunately, similar to the parts at the drop, this part is very bland and gets old very quickly. There isn't even an attempt to mix it up a bit-the player simply goes up and down and up and down repetitively until the level ends. Please try mixing parts like these up more next time.
Score: 2.5/10
Sorry for such a miserable score, it's just that all the parts feel the same (with the exclusion of the robot and cube sections) and it makes the level honestly unfun to play.
Background effects:
First things first, the background is pretty cool-however, it pretty much stays the same throughout the entire level. Pretty much exactly the same. Sometimes the same background is reused in seperate parts of the level. In other parts, the SHAPE of the background changes, but the colors are exactly the same. This makes the background unimpressive as you continue to progress through the level.
Score: 5/10.
While decently impressive, the background barely changes at all throughout the entire level. Try making a variety of effects for future levels!
Block Design: While simple, i'd say the block design works for a level like this. It fits the atmosphere of the song and level. However, similar to the background, there is a lack of variety, and as such, the design ages quite quickly. I must say though, the glow effect on the blocks makes the design decently attractive.
Score: 6/10
While the block design works for the level, it is relatively simple and does not change throughout the entire level.
Sync:
Remember when I said this level really felt like a combo of missed opportunities? The sync is a prime example of that. Like the gameplay, I will go through each part.
1st Ship Section (0-10%)
This part does not sync at all. A form change would have been nice. Even some gravity or size portals would really help. Remember, little sync is better than no sync.
Cube Section (10-23%)
Unlike the previous part, this section syncs pretty well. I LOVE your use of slopes to emphasize the environment of the song, but other wise the orbs and invisible portals sync it up pretty decently.
Ball Section (23-34%)
Similar to the gameplay, it starts off pretty decently, but rapidly declines in quality at the 30% mark. You seriously should consider occupying the player with gameplay here to provide some sync. While the song is beating off in the background, no input is required from the player. Really poor job at the end here.
2nd Ship Section (37-56%)
Other than the speed to help the intensity of the song and a measly gravity portal in the middle, this part lacks any sync at all.
UFO Section (56-72%)
Same exact situation as the ship part. Not even the UFO jumps sync with the song.
Robot Section (72-85%)
Unlike the previous two sections, the sync in this part is decent. The orbs and portals here sync well, but other than that not much to say. I would have enjoyed if you made the robot's jumps follow the slower beats of the song (ie longer jumps for longer holding of the notes)
Spider Section (85-100%)
The section syncs well, however you could have gone the extra mile and really added some things that would enhance the sync while the player isn't doing anything.
Score: 3/10
Once again, apologies for the very low score here, it's just that barely any of the parts sync very well. In fact, I would say this score is pretty generous.
Final Evaluation:
What can you do to improve?
Gameplay:
Cause the player to be more occupied with the level. I can't stress enough that nearly every part feels the same to me, and since those parts are boring, about 74% of the level is a drag. For the purpose of keeping the player on their toes and entertained, try and change the gameplay more by using more form changes, gravity portals, orbs, and, while it wouldn't really fit this level, some speed changes, so that the player isn't constantly day dreaming while playing the level.
Decoration:
Find a variety of backgrounds and block designs! This would really help keep the level more fresh and keep the player intrigued instead of the entire level feeling the same. Experiment more with the tools you have: there are plenty of features you could be using that are left untouched.
Sync:
In addition to adding more gameplay, make sure that new gameplay syncs well. Not only does it make the level a lot more satisfying, but it really adds a nice touch to the level that can never really be explained. This can also bring a whole new idea of originality to the level to make it more memorable.
Final Score: 16.5/40: Decent.
The scale goes as such:
0-15: Needs Improvement
15-25: Decent
25-35: Feature Worthy
35-40: Epic Worthy.
Give me some recommendations to alter the scale if you want!
Hope the review was detailed enough.
