INTRODUCTION
This is a list of the Top 10 Darkest/Most Depressing Songs.
Feel free to suggest any songs for me to add to this list!
Note: The connotations I use for "dark" are not the same as for "creepy" or "scary", and for "depressing" I consider it a more grayscale, much more intense version of "sad".
THE LIST
1. Gloomy Sunday (Rezső Seress)
A gloomy song about a man wanting to be reunited with his dead lover through death, and asking his dead lover to visit his funeral. Eighteen suicides have been attributed to the song, which has also been known as the "Hungarian Suicide Song". Thirty-five years later, the composer committed suicide.
"Last Sunday, my dear, please come along,
There will even be priest, coffin, catafalque, hearse-cloth.
Even then flowers will be awaiting you, flowers and coffin.
Under blossoming trees my journey shall be the last."
2. Jump! (Van Halen)
"Jump!" is a very upbeat song... but the lyrics are the exact opposite. The song is about a man who is suicidal and wants to jump off of a building.
"I ain't the worst that you've seen.
Oh can't you see what I mean?
Might as well jump. Jump!
Might as well jump.
Go ahead, jump. Jump!
Go ahead, jump!"
3. How to Save a Life (The Tray)
"How to Save a Life" is about someone trying to talk another person out of suicide... but failing. It's hard to get more depressing than that.
"Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend,
Somewhere along in the bitterness,
And I would have stayed up with you all night,
Had I known how to save a life."
4. Tears in Heaven (Eric Clapton and Will Jennings)
This is a song about Clapton's four-year-old son Conor, who died in 1991 after falling from a skyscraper.
Will Jennings wrote this song, which is just one among his many sad songs (including "My Heart will Go On" from "Titanic")
"Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven"
5. Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday)
This is a song about racism and racial injustice in the Southern US. The lyrics aren't the only dark part about the song; the music is quite haunting as well.
"Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees"
6. Mad World (Gary Jules)
The song describes a depressed man thinking life isn't worth living anymore.
"And I find it kinda funny,
I find it kinda sad,
The dreams in which I'm dying,
Are the best I've ever had,
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take,
When people run in circles,
It's a very, very mad world, mad world."
7. わたしのアール (Hatsune Miku)
Another song about suicide...
"When I was just about to take off my shoes on the rooftop,
I found someone already there before me—a girl with braided hair.
Despite myself, I called out to her: “Hey, don’t do it.” "
8. Pumped Up Kicks (Foster the People)
This is a song about a disturbed teenager who has a jealousy of his peers so great it drives him to kill others.
"All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet."
9. Bloodstream (Ed Sheeran)
A song about the effects on someone's life once they start drugs.
"This is how it ends.
I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream.
Fading out again.
I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream.
So tell me when it kicks in."
10. The Catalyst (Linkin Park)
A song about how corrupt the human race is, and how we will destroy ourselves.
"God bless us everyone,
We're a broken people living under loaded gun.
And it can't be outfought,
It can't be outdone,
It can't be outmatched,
It can't be outrun.
No!"
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Unwell (Matchbox 20)
A song about a man going insane... and not knowing what to do about it.
"I'm talking to myself in public;
Dodging glances on the train.
And I know, I know they've all been talking about me.
I can hear them whisper.
And it makes me think there must be something wrong with me.
Out of all the hours thinking.
Somehow I've lost my mind."
The A Team (Ed Sheeran)
Another song about drugs and life for those in the lower classes. The wasting away of a person makes this song very depressing.
"And they say,
She's in the class A team.
Stuck in her daydream,
Been this way since eighteen,
But lately, her face seems,
Slowly sinking, wasting,
Crumbling like pastries,
And they scream,
The worst things in life come free to us,
'Cause we're just under the upper hand,
And go mad for a couple grams."
Semi Charmed Life (Third Eye Blind)
Again, a song about a man doing drugs and only managing to live a "semi-charmed" life.
"The sky it was gold, it was rose.
I was taking sips of it through my nose.
And I wish I could get back there,
Some place back there,
Smiling in the pictures you would take,
Doing crystal meth,
Will lift you up until you break.
It won't stop..."
The Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)
This is a slow and poetic song about how humans find it difficult to communicate with each other.
"People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share.
And no one dared,
Disturb the sound of silence"
I Am A Rock (Simon and Garfunkel)
This song describes a recluse that cuts himself off from anything social.
"I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island."
How Could this Happen to Me (Simple Plan)
This song is about drunk drivers, but can be interpreted to any instance where someone has done something they regret.
"How could this happen to me?
I made my mistakes,
Got nowhere to run,
The night goes on,
As I'm fading away.
I'm sick of this life,
I just wanna scream,
How could this happen to me?"
The Experiment (Steampianist, TriAxis, Nova, and featuring Gumi)
A song about the darker intrinsic human traits. Rather chilling and creepy.
"We are you - We are the madness that lurks within you.
We are you - We are the animal instinct of greed.
We are you - We witness when the day breaks anew.
We are you - We no longer wish to be freed."
Screen (Twenty-One Pilots)
A song criticizing the way humans are nowadays.
"I'm standing in front of you
,
I'm standing in front of you
,
I'm trying to be so cool
,
Everything together trying to be so cool."
Sad Violin/Sad Romance (Thao Nguyen Xanh)
Need I say any more... it's so depressing and melodic.
-no lyrics-
River Flows in You (Yiruma)
A sad piano masterpiece... like Sad Violin it's very sad and melodic.
-no lyrics-
