Here's a mini-essay on what we need to do to help each other get features. Please take the time to respond with your opinions - I spent maybe an hour typing this up.
So as I was thinking about SirHadoken's new level, Evolution of GD (go play it, it's awesome) I realized why we unknown creators don't get features.
Let's look at the economy. (I'm describing the U.S. economy, but it may well apply in other countries.)
In the U.S., there are a few people who have tons of money, and a larger but not-too-big amount who have quite a bit of wealth. Only a few manage to make their way up to that status from the middle. Then there are those who work hard, but still can't get that wealthy because they aren't so well known. Others don't entirely know how to get so much money, and they wonder why they can't. (Of course, there are also those that just don't try, and they're the worst off because they don't care, but that's irrelevant.) It doesn't seem fair, does it?
The popular creators are sometimes complained about, as they get a large fraction of the features and are by far more noticed than other creators. Other creators can't seem to get off the ground, no matter how hard they try. Seems familiar, right? If not, replace every instance of "wealth" and "money" in that paragraph with "features".
We don't want so many people wishing they were part of the select few - it's far more enjoyable for them if they can be part of the select few. If everyone who wanted a feature got one, this game would be much more fun for many reasons which are pretty self-explanatory. But how do we make this feature system more diverse?
The main way that levels are promoted, it seems, is through YouTube. I note that Viprin is taking level requests, which is awesome, and I appreciate that he is taking the time to play levels by lesser-known creators. The only problem with this is, it's still a very small selection of people who are getting this promotion. Why? Because their levels look better, of course. So how do the other creators, who get frustrated because the levels they request don't get uploaded, improve their creation skills? Through feedback.
I don't know about anyone else, but one of the things I enjoy most about Geometry Dash is playing levels and making suggestions to the creator on how it could be improved. There are a couple reasons that I do this. The first one is that it helps the creator improve their level, and make it more enjoyable to play because of better gameplay and/or decorations. The other is that it actually benefits everyone. Anyone can read the feedback that you give, including yourself, and learn better creating skills from it. Through looking critically at someone else's work, you realize what you should do with your own.
I hope that every single thread advertising a level gets at least one solid piece of feedback. To make sure that deserving creators get features, we need to work together to make them worthy of a famous GD YouTuber's time. Any level can be improved - so let's help each other improve them.
