Expand the News plugin at the top (examples)

So there's the kinda News report thing that displays various news or random sentences (*cough* "zeCookie necroposts, all members praise her" *cough*) and I feel it's not used very much. So here's a few examples to brighten it up a bit:
• Today's birthdays. It can be an automated system that lists them all in one go.
• 2.1 news. I haven't checked the News plugin yet but I do believe it's lacking 2.1 news.
• Situations in the community. Like "<insert name here> quits" or something, a news that shows something that happened in the community.
• Member of the Month. Each month, there will be a nomination of who gets to be the Member of the Month. You cannot nominate yourself/vote yourself. Halfway through the month the nominations will close and voting will begin in a poll that's marked "Important" so it appears in all boards. At the end of the month, they all choose the best member who has the most votes!
