Not everyone is following it, but recently (just two days ago, in fact), Viprin released a short video on his YouTube channel, which I recommend viewing. It explains the rules for the World Gauntlet Contest, an international contest where players will create megacollabs with other creators from their countries and submit them to a form, with the best ones becoming levels in the upcoming World Gauntlet. Where this gets more interesting is that this gauntlet will not be released in 2.1, but rather in 2.2.
Although the end date for the contest is anybody's guess right now, I assume RobTop must have some sort of plan for 2.2 to arrive in the coming months (or less, hopefully); if there wasn't a plan at all, I don't know why he and Viprin would begin a contest now when the winning levels are meant to be released alongside or shortly after 2.2, even though it was stated creators will have "plenty of time" (which has very different meanings depending on the person). It is also important to mention that the day this video came out was January 16th, a very significant date in GD since it marks the release date of 2.1, the most recent major update, 4 years ago; this in turn leads me to suspect that the timing of this was all very deliberate and planned carefully despite the lack of an official end date for the contest as of this writing (typing? posting?).
Although I don't want to further wild speculation any more than I already have, I hope that this means 2.2 will be out within 3-4 months, maximum; the maximum number of creators allowed per megacollab is 5, and no person in that collab can have already participated in another, so that cuts time down significantly, not to mention limitations on object count, length, and difficulty, so things like optimization, overly long levels, and long periods of time needed for verification will probably not be as predominant.
What do you think? Am I onto something or am I going insane with false hope?

Due to the presence of a new gauntlet contest, 2.2 will likely not be released until after that deadline is passed in order to prevent a weird balance of 2.1 and 2.2 levels making it into the gauntlet, as the 2.2 levels would likely start off being lower quality due to the update being fresh. How much later after that is impossible to know due to Robtop's consistent inconsistency.

maby if you enter thennyou have to build your level in the subzero editor for 2.2 features Maybe but I personally consider it highly unlikely because 1) not everyone knows how to or has the ability to access the subzero editor for that and some people might not even want to, and 2) even if no one had a problem with it, that would be a huge amount of crazy, messy, "cancerous" 2.2 levels that more than likely feature heavy camera trigger abuse, random trigger abuse, etc. To each their own though |

I seriously doubt 2.2 will be releasing anytime soon because of this. We've had contests for 2.2 in the past (even back in 2017) and nothing really came out of those, other than "soon". I will note that those contests were icon contests and that since this is a gauntlet contest, it is a bit more likely that 2.2's release will be tied to the gauntlet deadline. But, there is still no sneak peek and I don't even think RobTop knows whether the update is done or not. There is a good chance that we will not know the deadline of the gauntlet contest for a long time, due to the release state of 2.2 being unknown.

Seriously, I recommend you to join the Official Geometry Dash Discord Server to stay up to date. RobTop and Viprin don't know when the update gonna be released but all information and the whole community moved to Discord. On Discord RobTop also admitted to just fix bugs AND he created an own Twitch channel and show us, how he rate levels or show some 2.2 stuff live!
Alrought, I personally guess that 2.2 get released in summer-winter 2021!

RobTop and Viprin don't know when the update gonna be released but all information and the whole community moved to Discord. On Discord RobTop also admitted to just fix bugs AND he created an own Twitch channel and show us, how he rate levels or show some 2.2 stuff live! It will only be used for that (in my experience). However, there are enough other Discord servers receiving messages from GDS in their own server, by following the news channel. I have more doubts now since he's only just started working on the level for the sneak peek, which he claimed to be almost finished with a year ago, so it seems less likely and also kinda weird that he would blatantly lie like that because he doesn't stand to gain anything good from it. |
