Perhaps this key is used in the new level in the update ( or levels cause I don't even know if RobTop confirmed there is only ONE new level ) to unlock the vault.
Edit: He did say after the post though that he likes hiding stuff IN the game, this then doesn't particularly mean any level, maybe just in the main menu or something. Just something to think about.

Doubt it. Most of the older levels don't have any more good places to hide stuff  He could make places to hide them like what he did with stereo madness & all the other levels before secret coins existed. but still that'd make there be too much of a collector's aspect to the game instead of just beating the level, you also can find coins AND keys. |

Concidering he added "daily chests" and such, everything is possible i sincerely hope he doesnt add daily chests/rewards and focuses too much on currency, for me that will ruin the main aspects of the game on grinding some currency that (hopefully) doesnt contribute to your stats in any way. i enjoy how gd is structured at the moment, its just the content in general that ruins my enjoyment ;-; |

wow, looks great! im guessing its just another cosmetic though, nothing special that it does that a normal key wouldnt do (?) the normal key is also a cosmetic, fyi thats what i meant, by "what a normal key wouldnt do" i meant get picked up by the player, nothing special |

Remember the loading screen message "This would be a good place to hide a secret"? This could possibly be related to that, just brainstorming.
