Some people prefer ships that terminate in a point at the front, so it might be easier to see when you're going straight in a straight ship section, but that doesn't necessarily mean its better. Certain icon/color combinations also might make your icon a little bit easier to focus on in a messy level. Other than those two things I can't think of anything that might help, all icon hitboxes are supposed to be the same.

I tested the waves at least and it seemed like the really thick waves had the same hitbox as the really thin ones (as shown by the thick waves being able to go through spikes slightly), so I'd say they all perform the same, though I didn't do very thurough testing.
