I don't get Z order. The editor says it's the "draw order of the object". WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!?!? Other sources say it determines if an object is below or above another object. ...isn't that what layering is? I've played around with it in the editor and it doesn't seem to do anything. Like, it's the ONE thing about the editor I just don't get at all. I assume it has something to do with the Z axis, which makes sense with the whole "layering" thing.

Z Order is essentially the same thing as layers, but while there is a limited number of layers the Z order layers are unlimited. If you have a bunch of objects grouped together (say 20 or so), then it'd be impossible to make sure one object is above the rest of the others because there only 7 regular layers, not 20. Basically, Z Order is for layering objects above or below each other that are on the same regular layer.

Z Order and Z Layers are almost the same things, except that Z Order is for ordering objects that have the same Z Layers. Z Orders are just like "mini" versions of Z Layers.
Let's say for example, you have an object with Z Layer as 1 and Z Order 3, and another with Z Layer 1 and Z Order 4. The second object will be above the first one, because even though they have the same Z Layer, the Z Order is still higher. Then, if you have an object with Z Layer as 2 and Z Order 3, and another with Z Layer 1 and Z Order 4. Although the Z Order is higher, the second object will now be below the first one because the Z Layer is higher.
It is really useful if you have a lot of objects like 10 or more objects and you want all of them in Z Layer 1. This is where Z Order becomes useful.
