Splitting into gameplay and decoration...
Gameplay The level really lacks in readability. The ability to read the layout is hindered through blinking at the early section and invisible portals. This is a huge problem, as the player rely on reading the layout to play the level. Examples include these: (I kept blocks visible if they can be inferred from information given at the blink, but you can see there are something invisible, making the players to guess, which worsens the problem of readability) You may think this is difficulty, but it isn't. It is unfairness. Players are forced to do a blind jump with memory of where the spike is, which, paired with the moving camera, is very difficult. Also, the sudden change in speed and gamemode can mess up people, especially when the players have to act quickly after the switch. If you want to see tortured souls, go ahead, but if you want levels to impress others, please don't do that. Here are a other few tips. - 44%: What are those? /\_/\ It is really difficult to jump into the gap between two spikes. Considering that you are making an easy demon, this will cause a diffiuculty spike, which is bad. You want to level to be consistent in difficulty, with minor discrepancies. - 47%: The orb is offscreen when approached. Players need something to read so that they can react. Of course there is something called memory, but it is best to avoid forcing players to memorise. Here is a little gif illustrating that. - 53% to 79%: The wave section basically repeats itself, with no variety at all. This is boring to play so don't copypasta. - 62% to 79%: - 79% to 90%: The ball part is messy. If you want to make distraction platforms, distinguish the distraction ones and the real ones. This is something done in Deadlocked and many other levels, either by red or crosses or something that looks like warnings. - 15% to 21%, 37% to 43% and 90% to 100%: These are the empty areas of your level. Did you see the for 22% of the level you can continue by doing absolutely nothing? Autos, credits, transitions usually take at most ~10% of the level. So please shorten the empty parts as much as possible. - The level should be at least 1 minute. Else, it would be too short and be marked as too short, namely 'Medium'. Aim for Long, or XL if the song segment is longer than 2 minutes. - Syncing is quite poor. Remember, you are playing a level with a song. There's no meaning of a song to exist when you don't need the song to time jumps.
Decoration The decoration is stright up unacceptable in 2.1. The blocks lack variety, and is simply bland and boring. Air decoration and background is also not present, which is another huge minus. Here are other thing about decoration.
- Please don't use blocks from 1.0, unless you have a good reason using it indirectly. Building levels with old blocks will often give nostalgia, which in GD is not really a good thing in terms of deco. Consider lines, newer decoration with more detail, multi-object block deco, and more. - Don't enlarge saws to 2.0x. They don't look good enlarged, if you want to make a tunnel the player cannot touch, use blocks then coat it with spikes and saws, preferably smaller saws of different kinds. On a sidenote, usually blocks don't have good resolution so think twice before using any enlarged objects. - If you want to make something look disordered and random (like the saws at the ball section), consider using free move to move objects around. Human input is always the most random thing in a game.
If you have played any epic-rated level, you will see what decoration deserves that rating. If that overwhelms you in making the level, try modernistic deco spreading the decoration process into days, or even weeks. Slowly build a block deco and adding that to each of the block. Deco takes time, so don't rush and put time into it. The more time you give, the better the end product will be. (that's also the main reason why creators often post levels monthly not weekly, and why the #levelution drama exist)
Verdict Needs Improvement. This level lacks in both gameplay and decoration. I always recommend people to experiment and experience. Play epic levels and try something small but unique, tiny but interesting. Good luck!
