Alright this is going to be a little lesson in online discourse for all of you.
I see people all the time who will put out statements or make claims, but then when they get challenged they back down and say "Oh I don't want an argument, stop responding to me". I figured that I would write a quick little thing telling you why this is so dumb.
In any given situation, you are totally within your right to say things that might be contentious. However, other people have just as much of a right to respond to said contentious things. You do not get to dictate when people should or should not respond to you based on whether or not you want an argument. If you truly do not want an argument, then simply put, you should not state your beliefs. I know that may seem blunt, but it's kind of the truth. If you do not want to have an argument with someone, do not share your beliefs ever. No belief deserves to go unchallenged. Or, you can simply not respond to the people who disagree with you. You're under no obligation to respond to those people, and this is the internet where confrontation is totally avoidable, so in a situation like that you should just live with it even if you don't want to respond.
Furthermore, if you're in an argument with another person, and you want to stop, the onus is on YOU to disengage with that person, not on THEM to stop making points. There's nothing wrong with wanting to stop an argument, but there's also nothing wrong with wanting to continue an argument, and as long as said person isn't doing things to annoy you (like spam tagging on discord/twitter/whatever), then it's YOUR job to stop responding. Even if they keep talking after you've left, what can they do? They can only talk for so long before they'll run out of things to say. Now, you may say that this means you don't get the last word of the argument, and you're 100% correct. But that shouldn't matter. If you want to leave the argument who fucking cares who gets the last word? What makes you think you deserve to have it? If that's what you're worried about then you're probably discussing for the wrong reasons.
That's all I really had to say on this topic. Pretty short thread overall.
