Interview
Deltablu
Hey everyone! Deltablu here, and today we have a special guest here for an interview - a well-known Geometry Dash creator, Etzer!
Etzer
Sup my dude
Deltablu
Alright, so I have several questions to ask you regarding your role in the community as a whole, seeing as you contribute to it so much!
Etzer
Okay, go ahead
Deltablu
I would first like to inquire about the start of your Geometry Dash career, which may seem cliche, but I'm interested. When did you start playing Geometry Dash, and what got you hooked?
Etzer
I started September 2014 I believe, maybe it was 2015, it's been a while... But I started about 3 weeks before 1.9
I made a few 1.8 levels that have disappeared at this point, and them when 1.9 came out I started Etzer
I made hyperdrive my first level on the account, and the famous Spanish YouTubers bycraft played it and it got rated
I liked the feeling of people giving feedback and viewing my content, so I kept making levels
Deltablu
Interesting, so seeing as your initial interest in Geometry Dash was creating levels, did you every consider playing/beating other levels important or worthwhile?
Etzer
I've always been terrible at beating levels, so that didn't interest me at all
I found it unrewarding to beat levels because you'd have to put too much time into it
Whereas levels were permanent and more recognizable by anyone
Deltablu
To be honest, I've never thought about it like that. But now that you bring it to light, I understand why many people choose to take that path. If one beats a level that is considered noteworthy, eventually other people will make harder levels, which will inevitable nullify one's achievement. Did you have any inspiration from other creators at the time you started creating?
Etzer
I made my first few levels on my own, but I subscribed to viprin and glittershroom, and darnoc of course. They were the first "famous" geometry dash players I was aware of. None of them were effect creators, so I didn't really learn or get inspired by them.
Deltablu
Which level do you think launched you into the world of superior creators?
Etzer
It's hard to say... I made a lot of 1.9 levels, and they constantly got better every level, but they were getting better as others were getting better too. So every new level would have to be better to be considered my best. I'd say my first level that did really really well was of course hyper arcade. I have a lot of really memorable 1.9 levels that I'm proud of but in terms of the best I think hyper arcade would have to be it. It was definitely ahead of its time, and while it isn't a good level anymore, for then it was crazy
Deltablu
I recall being amazed by the decorations in that level, especially the way you utilized the editor to simulate different games for different parts. I think HyperArcade was an inspirational level for a good amount of creators as well, teaching people not to be withheld by the alleged bounds of the editor. While in 1.9, would you have ever thought you creating a level like Elec2ronic Super Joy would be viable?
Etzer
Not really, but I didn't really want it to be viable to create ever. I preferred geometry dash as a smaller game. 1.9 still remains my favorite update because it had a really good balance between simplicity and complexity. No unlimited colors and complex menus, just flat out, simple, vanilla, easy building.
Deltablu
Building off of your reply, do you think RobTop went overboard with the amount of aspects he added to the level editor? Also, do you think that the levels which user "older" design and decoration are too quickly disregarded?
Etzer
Wayyyyy overboard. 2.1 is my least favorite update just because it tries too hard. It's not robtops fault, it's ours for needing more. I love geometry dash still, it's just not the same as it used to be, way too tedious and complicated now. That's mostly why you dont see levels by me anymore
Deltablu
I did see the level I mentioned before, Elec2ronic Super Joy, which was made in the 2.1 editor, right? Did you enjoy making that level, or did you dislike it due to the overcomplication in the editor?
Etzer
Uh I had a little fun, but the end result wasn't anymore rewarding than making music or comedy videos. The difference is that with music and comedy, I have fun making the end product, and I didn't really with ESJ2. I was just making it so that in the end people could see it
Deltablu
I see. Rather than spending your time in-game nowadays, where do you spend most of it in the community?
Etzer
I mostly spend it in video editors and group chats
A few music production discord channels, my own discord, and Geostorm
Deltablu
I believe you are a GeoStorm staff member, so I have a question for you. What exactly do you look for in the people you invite to join GeoStorm?
Etzer
New members are rarely, rarely accepted, but if u have good stats and seem like a chill person you could be considered.
Deltablu
When did you yourself join the clan?
Etzer
About 2 years ago, when it was still a Skype chat. Much different back then. There are only like 30 members that have been there that long
Deltablu
I'm guessing that's around the time Weoweoteo decided to create it, right?
Etzer
Ummm I don't think so
It was around for a few months before then as well
Deltablu
Oh, really? I didn't know that GeoStorm was that old!
Etzer
Yea it's lasted longer than any other group
Deltablu
Moving on and sorry to digress, but what is your overall opinion on the state of the Geometry Dash community at the current moment?
Etzer
Ummm it's pretty big, so hard to put it "in a nutshell" I guess... 8) but I have my opinions
But it's a very wide group of people I suppose
I don't wanna say too much about it now tho 8)
Deltablu
Of course, the opinions on the community vary from place to place and individual to individual. I understand. Do you have any big projects planned for the future, no matter how immediate they are?
Etzer
Way too many of them. I of course want to keep most of them under wraps but maybe I can talk about one
Deltablu
Okay, you pick
Etzer
Mmm I have some really videos planned, as well as one project that is outside of geometry dash, but I think people will love. It's definitely my biggest project ever, and depending on how good I get it could be amazing
I want to keep all my projects vague, in case they change or redevelop but hopefully you can get an idea for maybe what I'd be going for
Deltablu
Maybe, I can see a few things to which you'd be working towards.
Etzer
OK cool
Deltablu
Thank you for your time today, Etzer! I wish you best of luck for the future of your Geometry Dash career, and thank you for taking the time to do this interview!
Etzer
Yea no problem
The main thing I found interesting while talking to Etzer was his opinion on how Robtop has seemingly overcomplicated Geometry Dash, concerning the level editor. While I do appreciate the exquisite levels some make nowadays, I can see where Etzer is coming from, especially since he has played Geometry Dash for a decently long time.
I hope you all enjoyed reading this interview! Big thanks to Etzer for doing this! Stay tuned for more interviews!
